Anil Kapoor scores over Aishwarya Rai

With his film Slumdog Millionaire shining among the top 10 films of the weekend on three continents, Anil Kapoor, who plays a complicated quiz show host in it, has set a record for an Indian actor. Not even Aishwarya Rai, who got miles of free publicity in the West thanks to her appearance on David Letterman show four years ago, can come anywhere near the success Kapoor has achieved. Her biggest success in North America, the 2004 romantic comedy Bride & Prejudice grossed $6.6 million in North America about half of what Slumdog has nabbed in its early run.

True, Sabu (The Thief of Bagdad, 1940) and Persis Khambatta (Star Trek, 1979) were featured in bigger movies than Slumdog but by the time these films were made they had settled down in the West.

"True, Slumdog Millionaire is a British film and it is in English but I am very much part of the movie industry in India," Kapoor said. "I was not actively looking to act in a foreign film at all." The film has high Oscars hopes riding on it.

In Italy, where it is number nine on the box office chart, the film has grossed nearly $1. 2 million in 10 days. In Australia, where it is in its first week, it grossed nearly $300,000 in its first five days. It was at number seven on the charts.

In the United States, it jumped from the 11th to the eighth position, grossing $3.1 million over the weekend and taking its cume to $12. 1 million. The film was showing in 589 theatres. Trade analysts believe that the film could have neared $4 million but for a major winter storm paralyzing many large cities in the Midwest and Northeast for hours on Friday.

"Anil Kapoor gave all of himself to the movie," said director Danny Boyle. "He has been around for more than three decades but his enthusiasm for this project was unbelievable."

Meanwhile, though Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a hit abroad, its second week showed that the film is not going to be a smash hit like Om Shanti Om.

It plummeted by 64 percent in North America in its second weekend, grossing about $325,000. For the record, its first weekend gross in North America was $950,000, about 20 percent less than the estimated gross. It grossed about $1.4 million in its first 10 days

The film held better In the United Kingdom.

Outside of India, where it reportedly grossed a strong $12 million in its first week, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer grabbed about $3.6 million in its first 10 days, including its North American and British grosses.

'Bollywood king' SRK, Sonia in powerful people list

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and film star Shah Rukh Khan find place among the ‘50 Most Powerful People of the World’ selected by American newsmagazine Newsweek.

US President-elect Barack Obama tops the list.

Chinese President Hu Jintao, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, German Chancellor Angela Markel, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jim Jong II are other world leaders on the list.

Newsweek has selected Sonia as the 17th most powerful leader and says Indian political scene is riven by factions, but the Congress remains the strongest national force and rules unchallenged. "In the world's largest democracy, she is the queen."

The magazine says Shah Rukh, who is No. 41 on the list, is the 'King of Bollywood'.

"It's not just that his (Khan's) romantic flicks make gazillions—it's where those gazillions come from. Khan is huge in the Muslim world, even in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the mullahs ban his films. Their main appeal is certainly the song-and-dance numbers, but Khan makes devoutly secular films where love trounces bigotry," the magazine says.

Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, who controls the country’s nuclear weapons, is placed 20th on the list, which would be published in the January 2009 issue of the magazine.

Kayani, the mumbling and chain-smoking general, answers to President Asif Ali Zardari in theory, but he and his army remain the dominant power in Pakistan. "He's responsible for Pakistan's nukes; for the battle against al-Qaeda and its tribal allies along the Afghan border; and for managing tensions with neighbour India," the magazine says.

Kayani, till now, has kept the army out of politics and seems focused on the battle against 'jihadists'. "In the wake of the November terrorist attacks in Mumbai, Kayani stood firm on Pakistan’s sovereignty while also taking measures against the alleged sponsors of the outrage," it says.

A surprise inclusion in the list, which the magazine admits is subjective, is Osama bin Laden, the "global terrorist." He is No. 42 in the list.

The magazine says the presidency of Obama, the "intensely charismatic" Democrat, who will be inaugurated on January 20, will be judged on how he handles the economic crisis that now envelops the US and the world. "For Obama to be remembered as a great President, he has to do nothing less than rescue capitalism."

Dhoni and his debut in Bollywood

Being a stylish icon on cricket field, Indian Captain M.S. Dhoni is cheerfully gearing up to sway in Bollywood. Yup! Some of his closest sources have revealed he would be a part in David Dhawan's 'Hook Ya Crook'. The film produced by UTV Motion Pictures is slated to start rolling from second week of Jan, 2009. With John Abraham in lead role, Siddarth who shot to fame with Rang De Basanti in 2006 has been roped in for other lead.

Perhaps, none of the sources from UTV has let its tongue regarding Dhoni's role in this film. As of now, discussions are going between Dhoni and Producers and things would be finalized soon. Sumptuously making high waves in small screens, Mahi is all set making directorial debut with 'Hook Ya Crook'. Rensil D'Silva who won laurels for his stunning script of Rang De Basanthi is back crafting a colossal tale. Buzzes are that it would Genelia D'Souza donning female lead while rest of the casts is yet to be finalized.
